For anyone considering scoliosis treatment, I would tell them, get yourself to Dr. Hostin as soon as possible. It's been about 4 months now, and I'm in excellent condition. I've almost got my full mobility back and pretty much have resumed my normal activities.
Jeff G's Story
In my teens I was diagnosed with scoliosis. I was told they, my family doctor, would "just watch it". Little did I know, now in my early 20's, that the diagnosis would progress to severe scoliosis. The doctors told me that if nothing was done, that by my mid-thirties or early forties I would become hunched over.
If there is one thing I am grateful for, that I have done, is to have scoliosis surgery. I'm really glad I chose this option.
When I was in high school I knew I had a problem, but I just didn't realize how severe it would become. I knew my back was not like others. My family doctor told me I had a curvature of the spine, but he didn't think it was a big problem right now, but that we should continue to watch it. I really didn't know a lot about it, and had no idea how a curvature of the spine could affect people. So I didn't do anything about it.
But as I grew, I knew my back was getting worse. It was becoming uncomfortable when I sat or stood in one position for any length of time. It bothered me a lot, so I decided to find out how bad it was - and if something could be done about it. I had done some research online, and had read that some scoliosis patients wear braces. That sounded like something I could handle.
My family doctor referred me to a bone and joint specialist. During my first visit he made x-rays of my spine. Now I could see how my spine looked. It was much worse than my family doctor had predicted, and much worse than I expected. The bone and joint specialist said I had an "S" curve , and would require surgery. Oh no, I thought, my worst fear. The bone and joint specialist said he had performed these kinds of surgeries in the past, but that he was retired now, and was only back at this clinic in a part time status. He said that he would like for me to see someone who specializes in this type of surgery, and referred me to Dr. Hostin at the Baylor Scoliosis Center, in Plano. Which I now know is Consulting Orthopedists . I called and arranged an appointment with Dr. Hostin .
From the first appointment with Dr. Hostin, I felt at ease. He was very thorough, he checked me over from my head to my toes, did more xrays, and ordered lab work. The staff at Consulting Orthopedist are the best!! Very professional, and caring too . They realize what patients need when they are faced with health problems, and go the extra step to help patients feel at ease. Dr. Hostin is the best, hands down. He always dotted his "i's" and crossed his "t's" in everything he did with me.
I had my scoliosis surgery in June 2007, came home seven days after surgery, and have been improving every day since . I didn't have to go to rehab, Dr. Hostin said I could go home, but he wanted to check on me each week to be sure I was progressing. It's been about 4 months now, and I'm in excellent condition. Not quite as flexible as I was before the surgery, but I'm getting there. I've almost got my full mobility back and pretty much have resumed my normal activities.
For anyone considering scoliosis treatment, I would tell them, get yourself to Dr. Hostin as soon as possible. I am really glad I had this surgery, and just want to let everyone know that there is help for scoliosis. Thank you, Dr. Hostin, and your staff for changing my life for the better !!!
